Monster Hunter Wilds: 8-star Tempered monsters, Hammer buffs, and more planned for May update

The game's graphics and optimisation issues will also be addressed in Title Update 1 and future content updates.

Following up on its massively successful first month, Monster Hunter Wilds is set to release a series of balance adjustments, including the addition of 8-star Tempered monster hunts, buffs to the Hammer, balance changes to the Mantle equipment options, and more. These adjustments are planned to be released in either the scheduled content update at the end of May or in future patches, as stated in a letter from Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda celebrating the game racking up over 10 million copies sold in its first month.

Monster Hunter Wilds May update detailed

Monster Hunter Wilds' end of May update will notably feature the game's first collaboration event with an as yet unnamed Capcom title.

The 8-star Tempered hunts will feature Gore Magala and the apex predators of each locale: Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, and Jin Dahaad. These 8-star hunts will differ from the 7-star Tempered hunts for these monsters as they “have had various behind-the-scenes adjustments to make them more resilient, such as increased health, resistance to wounding, and tweaks to multiplayer scaling.”

Weapon adjustments are also on the horizon for Monster Hunter Wilds, with the Hammer being first on the developers' list of weapons to receive buffs. “We are currently carefully considering upward adjustments for the Hammer, and then looking at other overall weapon balance adjustments with a goal to implement them either in the end of May update or the second title update in summer,” said Tokuda.

Mantles, hunting equipment that provide a variety of effects to the hunter for a limited time when worn, are also due for adjustments. The Corrupted Mantle, which Tokuda said “was overtuned at launch” and building up more damage than expected, will be nerfed. At the same time, the Rocksteady Mantle, Mending Mantle, and Evasion Mantle will also get buffed in order to balance the lineup of Mantles to suit the different styles of play employed by hunters.

Capcom plans to work on graphics and optimisation issues as well

With graphics and optimisation issues also plaguing Monster Hunter Wilds' all the way from its open beta periods up to its launch version, Tokuda assured players – especially those playing on PC – that they are “continuing to identify stability issues and make improvements where possible.”

Specifically, the game's director said that PC players can expect “a reduction in VRAM usage and an upgrade to the DirectStorage version of the Steam version.” Unlike the adjustments listed above, these improvements are set to implemented as part of Monster Hunter Wilds' Title Update 1 on Friday (4 April).

Tokuda also said that continued technical improvements for Monster Hunter Wilds are also planned for future patches.

In addition, the developers are also working on adding quality-of-life updates, such as reductions to the waiting time when accessing facility functions in each locale; UI/UX improvements when it comes to restocking items, checking skill information, participating in multiplayer quests and using the Seikret; and improved camera behaviour during hunts.

Finally, Tokuda also revealed that the highly-requested addition of Layered Weapons – a mechanic that allows players to overlay a different weapon's appearance on the one they are currently using – will also be coming in a future update.

Monster Hunter Wilds to continue getting content updates

The adjustments mentioned by Tokuda above are part of an effort by Capcom to improve the gameplay experience for Monster Hunter Wilds through a series of free Title Updates. The first of these, Title Update 1, will feature the release of a returning monster in Mizutsune, two new hunts for High Rank Zoh Shia and Arch-tempered Rey Dau, the Grand Hub area, and more.

The game's second Title Update is also already set for a Summer release, with fan-favourite returning monster Lagiacrus confirmed to be among the new content coming with that update.

In addition, a ‘G-Rank’ DLC expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds – a la Iceborne for Monster Hunter World and Sunbreak for Monster Hunter Rise – is also expected to be released in around a year.

Monster Hunter Wilds launched globally on 28 February, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
