Fans will have to sit tight because production may take “some years."
Finally, there has been some progress on the Warhammer 40,000 series with Henry Cavill. After almost two years of negotiations, Games Workshop issued a “major update” on the upcoming series. “It’s official – Games Workshop and Amazon Studios have finalised their deal,” the company said, sharing that they were “all set to bring Warhammer to the screen.”
Games Workshop also published a legal version of the announcement on its investor webpage, which basically confirmed Amazon’s exclusive rights to produce films and TV series set within the universe. The announcement also confirmed that both companies have spent the past year carefully planning the stories and characters that will be brought to life and form the backbone of the Warhammer 40K cinematic universe.
“Project One” was also confirmed to go into development, with the script yet to be written. However, fans need to have more patience because according to Games Workshop, “it’ll be some years” before the project hits the screens. “Of course, as with all carefully crafted things, this all takes time... and trust us when we say, everyone involved is las-focused on getting it all just right,” they explained.
Warhammer 40,000 has a rich universe extending across multiple forms of media including novels, video games, and supplementary board games. In the realm of video games, Total War Warhammer 3 is set to release its next DLC Omens of Destruction on December 12, 2024. The franchise's latest full-scale video game, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, sold more than 4.5 million copies in its first month of release.
Henry Cavill shares his excitement for Amazon's Warhammer series
Many fans have been ecstatic about this piece of news, but perhaps none moreso than Henry Cavill himself. Sharing his excitement on Instagram, Cavill shared how he decided to “make a pilgrimage to the very first place” he bought Warhammer models 30 years ago.
Cavill also shared the collaborative effort behind the scenes. “My incredible team and I, alongside the brilliant minds at Games Workshop, have been working away in concept rooms, breaking down approaches to the enormity and magnificence of the Warhammer world,” he said.
He also shared how they've been “sifting through the plethora of incredible characters and poring over old tomes and texts,” with their efforts leading them to a “fantastic place to start our Universe” which has been agreed by the higher ups of both Games Workshop and Amazon.
Henry Cavill is well known for his passion for Warhammer 40K, publicly sharing his interest on interviews and social media posts, and even collecting and painting miniatures in his free time, especially during the pandemic.
House of the Dragon star and video game developer Abubakar Salim also expressed interest in the series, posting on X (formerly known as Twitter):
Many fans were supportive of Salim’s interest, with some like X user @JoshDenofNerds saying that he’d be an “incredible Vulkan” and calling this a potentially “epic” team-up.
Graham McNeill, New York Times best-selling author, former League of Legends lore writer, and one of the writers of Arcane Season 2, also shared interest on X, saying that if Henry is “looking for a writer who knows the IP inside out,” then “you have my chainsword!”
McNeill is also well known for his Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 novels, as well as his prior work as a games designer for Games Workshop.
