Infinity Nikki’s successful launch day on December 5 was marred with a hacking incident that overtook their official website.
Although Infinity Nikki’s December 5 launch was met with much anticipation by fans of developer Infold Games, the same developer for hit otome game Love and Deepspace, hackers took to ruin the launch by compromising Infinity Nikki’s official website in order to display an offensive message while also pointing towards a Genshin Impact private server.
The message, which read: “KILL YOURSELF! OR JUST BETTER TRY Genshin Impact SERVER!” included a QR code that reportedly directed users to a private discord server for Genshin Impact players. The account seemingly credited a Discord user with the username @keitaro_gg for the hack. This account is still active as of the time of writing.
Furthermore, reports from online users have also stated that Love and Deepspace’s official website temporarily displayed the same message. The hack lasted for around 30 or 40 minutes before being taken down by Infold Games.
According to an official statement by an Infold Games representative to Polygon, the company was “surprised and annoyed” about the incident, but was “ultimately glad that no significant damage was done” to the website before the offensive message was taken down. Website hijacking attacks are often only at surface level, although the danger of a deeper compromise is always present when these attacks are done.
Luckily for Infinity Nikki and Love and Deepspace, it seems like the hacking job was done by a few bad actors looking to be major party poopers for a few minutes of online infamy. While the compromised website did encourage players to join a private Genshin Impact server, there is no way to confirm or deny that the hacker who launched this attack is a part of the Genshin Impact community.
Infinity Nikki is an open-world dress-up RPG from former The Legend of Zelda director Kentaro Tominaga, and was touted by some media as the next ‘Genshin Killer’, a title that every gacha game seems to be handed to these days due to Genshin Impact's dominance of the gacha gaming sphere.
People have drawn comparisons to similarities between Infinity Nikki and Genshin Impact, but ultimately, their only glaring similarity is that they are both fantasy RPG free-to-play gacha games backed by Chinese developers. Infinity Nikki is, at its core, a dress-up game, while Genshin Impact veers in a totally different direction.
Infinity Nikki is available for download on Android, iOS, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
