PC players are going to have to be very, very patient to play GTA 6.
Sadly, it looks like Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t have a PC version available when it launches in 2025. Rockstar Games has confirmed that the open-world game will be a next-gen only title, launching on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. A PC version was not mentioned in neither the game’s first trailer nor its accompanying press release, suggesting that it’s simply not in the cards for now.
GTA 6 is skipping PCs at launch
GTA 6 won’t be releasing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, a fact which the company confirmed following a massive leak of the game last year. The trailer boasts some truly awe-inspiring visuals far exceeding the offerings of GTA 5, so that isn’t much of a surprise - but what might come as a shocker is that the sequel is also skipping PC platforms at launch. Sadly, that also leaves Steam Deck users in a rut.
Rockstar has a history of focusing on consoles at launch for new releases, before pushing a PC version out one to two years later. GTA 5 was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014 and finally Windows PC in 2015 - a whole two years after launch. The studio’s follow-up Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018, and only hit PC platforms one year later in 2019.
Alas, we might be looking at a similarly long wait for GTA 6 to get a PC version out - potentially in 2026 at the earliest, if Rockstar keeps this pattern going. It’s a strange omission considering how increasingly transparent the studio’s ‘double-dipping’ method of releases has become, and especially frustrating for PC players considering how far out the game is from release. Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser spoke of the game’s increased technical scope in a news release this week:
Grand Theft Auto 6 continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.
There’s always a chance that Rockstar will abruptly announce a PC version for GTA 6 soon. A small chance, but a chance nonetheless. GTA 6 is currently set for release in 2025. Check out our breakdown of the game’s stunning first trailer here.
