A lot of players are just falling to their deaths, according to the developer.
FromSoftware is celebrating Elden Ring’s one-year anniversary with a very appropriate infographic that points out the most popular ways players have died in the game. According to the developer, the game has racked up a whopping nine billion player deaths since launch - a number that still feels oddly small considering how punishing it can be to play.
Publisher Bandai Namco published the infographic on its website, narrowing down those nine billion deaths to their four leading causes. The chart claims that ‘enemies and NPCs’ are the leading cause of death at 69%, which isn’t surprising considering this category would include bossfights and angered NPCs in the open world.
Coming in second place at 15% are status effects, which includes players that were poisoned or fell victim to sleep, death blight, madness and more effects while wandering the Lands Between. The third-leading cause of death (14%), hilariously, is just falling to your death. Whether that means you accidentally stepped off a cliff or misjudged a jump, players should really watch their step in this game.
Now for the good stuff: bosses. Bandai Namco claims that players have triggered almost six billion boss battles since release, with the highest number of attempts going to Malenia at 329 million. Players also tried to fight Margit the Fell Omen 281 million times, Limgrave Tree Sentinel 277 million times, Radagon of the Golden Order 148 million times, and lastly Starscourge Radahn 139 million times.
The infographic tackles spells and incantations last. Rock Sling and Crystal Torrent were two of the most cast spells in the game, while Blessing of the Erdtree and Bestial Sling were two of the most acquired incantations. In games like these, it’s not unusual for players to look up ideal builds to get through the game with as little trouble as possible, so a lot of people were likely playing the game with very similar spells and incantations. These are pretty basic picks, with Blessing providing solid healing while Rock Sling puts out lots of damage.
Elden Ring’s first expansion Shadow of the Erdtree was revealed this year, promising, “new adventures in the Lands Between.” Here's the rest of the infographic:
