The new shooter will be set in the ‘Apex Universe’.
Respawn Entertainment’s hit battle royale game Apex Legends is getting a spin-off. Multiple job listings recently went up on Respawn’s official website, revealing that a new single player shooter spin-off of Apex Legends is currently in development.
The job listings refer to the game as the ‘Apex Universe FPS Incubation Project’, and that it will be a ‘brand new Respawn singleplayer adventure’. It’s worth noting that Apex Legends is already a spin-off of Respawn’s Titanfall and Titanfall 2, but this new game will likely steer further away from the original shooters to focus on the world and characters introduced in Apex Legends.
There’s always a chance that this is just Titanfall 3 in disguise, finally giving fans the sequel they’ve asked for since 2016’s Titanfall 2 and a continuation to its fairly brilliant story campaign. Given how massively Apex Legends has eclipsed the Titanfall series at this point however, it’s more likely that we’re getting a story-based game following one or more characters introduced in the battle royale game.
The world of Apex Legends is constantly expanding with deep ties to Titanfall lore. Ash and Blisk were characters from Titanfall 2’s story campaign for example, and other elements of their shared universe - such as the IMC faction - appear throughout each season in the form of comic storylines or map changes. The game already has a whopping roster of 21 Legends who could each lead their own game, armed with backstories and character dynamics that grow and change every season.
Whatever this game ends up being, don’t expect to get your hands on it anytime soon. Respawn Entertainment is a very busy studio these days. Three different Star Wars games are also in the works at the studio: Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, a new first-person shooter game and a strategy game. In addition to that, the studio also has to push out continuous seasonal updates for both Apex Legends and Apex Legends Mobile, which are being treated as two separate titles.
And an Apex Legends spin-off on top of that? No wonder the studio is hiring right now.
