The group stage phase for Archon’s Team League came to an end last night and every team knows its position coming into the elimination rounds.
Headlined by Hearthstone powerhouses Aleksandr “Kolento” Malsh, Cong “StrifeCro” Shu and Jan “Ekop” Palys, Cloud 9 took the top spot in the group stage of Archon’s Team League Championships. Although the international roster started with a wonky 1-2 record, they entered one very hot streak from week four, winning four matches in a row to climb to a 5-2 record with a +9 tie-breaker score.
Just one point behind them came Value Town. Captained by Jeffrey “Trump” Shih who led a roster of him, Brian Kibler and David “Dog” Caero, Value Town stopped the winning streak of Tempo Storm on Wednesday with a 6-2 victory, also securing their spot in the live finale.
With the standings finalized, one team is out of the competition and that’s Team Celestial. The line-up behind World Champion silver medalist Weng “TiddlerCelestial” Xieyu couldn’t win a single one of their seven matches. Tonight, Celestial will be joined by one of two teams who will play their Redemption match at 19:00 CEST: Team Liquid and Nihilum.
While Liquid’s seventh place was more or less expected given the horseheads’ unconvincing performance throughout the season, Nihilum’s sixth place comes as somewhat of a surprise. The roster of Dima “Rdu” Radu, Thijs “ThijsNL” Molendijk and Adrian “Lifecoach” Koy was flawless in the first three weeks and were looking as one of the favorites for the live finale. Ultimately, Nihilum ended up tied 4-3 with three other teams and only their poorer tiebreaker score locked them down in the redemption face-off.
The winner of Liquid and Nihilum will join Archon, Tempo Storm and Forsenboys in the next stage of the tournament.
