Singaporean-based VALORANT player, Germsg pleaded guilty to one count of corruptly receiving gratification under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Malcolm Chung "Germsg" Wai Kiat was found guilty on one count of match-fixing earlier today and was sentenced to spend four months in jail as well as pay a fine of S$400. Germsg was the team captain of Singaporea-based esports organisation, Resurgence, which competed in VALORANT amongst other titles.
The infringement took place during the Epulze Royal SEA Cup back in September 2020, in which Resurgence competed. Resurgence was pooled together in the same group as fellow Singaporeans Paper Rex, Vision Strikers from Korea, and Blackbird Ignis from Japan. As Resurgence lost the first two series of their group stage, their final match was against BBI, which was where the scandal started.
Germsg's friend and fellow gamer, Ryan “Dreamycsgo” Tan had suggested the idea of Germsg betting on himself to lose. He had also suggested that Germsg intentionally throw the match in order to win the bet. This was due to Dreamycsgo being in debt to Germsg for S$400 and having no way to repay him.
With the former professional VALORANT player seeing no other way to get his money back, he saw match-fixing as an easy exit. The older brother of Dreamycsgo would then transfer S$3,000 over to Germsg, to which he placed five bets totalling that amount. Resurgence would then go on to lose to BBI 2-0 with Germsg and the rest of the team playing poorly.
This was down to Germsg's instructions as he was the team captain and his teammates followed suit. After Resurgence was eliminated from the tournament, Germsg would go on to collect S$7,019 in winnings while keeping S$2,719 for himself. The remainder went back to other people, including his Resurgence teammates as well as Dreamycso and his affiliates.
The scandal also brought forth an investigation from Riot Games, who suspended both players as well as multiple team members from Resurgence. This was too much negative publicity for the Singaporean org to handle, who has since rebranded to just RSG.
