The former king of the Alliance can be an assassin or a warrior depending on what talents you choose at level 4 and 10. The question is, what does this mean for Heroes of the Storm?
In Game Team Composition Adaptation
Having a hero that can play two roles gives you the potential to tailor your team composition to what your team needs in game for the first time. Your team may have drafted one warrior in draft thinking that would be enough, but it turns out it is not. Varian Wrynn gives you the potential to become a more tanky team by picking the tank role. On the other side of the coin your team may have thought being tanky would be a good choice against your enemy, but you got an early lead and want to snowball harder. Guess what, you can now choose to be an assassin in game to tailor to that need. The possibilities are endless and this kind of flexibility is something I personally have been looking forward to for a long time.
More Drafting Options
Have you ever been in drafts where no one on your team hovers anything and chat is silent? What do you pick in these situations? The answer to that question now becomes Varian Wrynn. You can pick this hero with the comfort that if your team doesn’t pick a warrior or enough damage you can conform yourself to either of those roles. The flexibility that swapping roles in game allows is something this game has been missing for awhile now.
Surprise Factor
Varian Wrynn can be an ace in the hole that the enemy team doesn’t expect. Having the ability to be a warrior or an assassin allows you to surprise the enemy team. Based on your draft the enemy team could be expecting one or the other and you can choose to hold your talents until the first big fight and surprise them with which role you are. I know this isn’t the most effective way to play, but if you truly want to go for the shock and awe strategy you can bust out your talent choice when the enemy doesn’t expect it and take out the opposition.
