The sports club from Athens has noticed how much attention the game's getting, and has joined the competitive scene.
Just before the new year started, on December 29, yet another sports team announced its esports branch. Clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam had already stepped into digital competition, and Panathinaikos, or rather their athletic division, which is part of the wider umbrella, is prepared to join in. The organization has teams in League of Legends, Dota2, Starcraft, CSGO, NBA2K and, unsurprisingly, FIFA. Now they've stated their interest in Hearthstone too, after discovering the passionate Greek Hearthstone community.
The first player Panathinaikos strongly considers picking up is Chris "Logan" Mpoutakidis, who would be the team's captain. Logan appeared in competitive Hearthstone early, when he participated in Viagame's first iteration of their House Cup. He made name for himself by polishing Ramp Druid decks to perfection in 2014 together with Petar "Gaara" Stevanovic.
Other, more well known players from Greece include Dimtris "Dethelor" Theodoropoulos and George "Likeabawse" Papadimitrakopoulos, though it's not known yet if Panathinaikos considers contracting them too.
