The most random mix of guest characters from other games and brands shake up the lineup, as Sonic Racing prepares to hit tracks in September 2025.
SEGA has confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch on 25 September, 2025 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The latest entry in the Sonic kart-racing series introduces a new cross-dimensional gameplay twist and an expanded roster of characters from across gaming and pop culture.
Revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025, SEGA also announced that pre-orders are now available, offering three days of early access ahead of the official launch. Pre-order bonuses include a Werehog Pack based on Sonic Unleashed, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will feature a Sonic Prime character pack.
The game features 24 tracks and introduces a unique CrossWorlds mechanic. After the first lap of a race, the leading player chooses a portal that transports all racers to a new dimension for the second lap, dynamically changing the layout and scenery mid-race.
SEGA confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will support full cross-play, allowing players across all platforms to race together. This inclusion sets the game apart from other kart racers and positions it as a strong competitor in the genre following the recent release of Mario Kart World.
Hatsune Miku, Joker, and Minecraft characters join the race
Among the most high-profile guest characters confirmed for the game are Hatsune Miku and Joker from Persona 5. They will join the roster as free post-launch content, alongside Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon. These additions will race alongside core Sonic characters such as Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Metal Sonic.
SEGA also unveiled a collaboration with Minecraft, bringing Steve, Alex, and Creeper into the game. Tracks styled after Minecraft’s Overworld and Nether were shown, complete with minecart vehicles. This content will be exclusive to the Season Pass and Digital Deluxe Edition.
With its multi-platform support, guest stars, and inventive gameplay, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds looks like it is going to be one of the most ambitious entries in the series to date.
