Final Fantasy Tactics remaster officially revealed

A remaster of 1997’s Final Fantasy Tactics has been rumoured to be in the works for some time now, and we finally got a first look at the game this week. This classic strategy RPG is getting a slick makeover, taking players back to the world of Ivalice–a kingdom ruled by the Two-headed Lion and blessed by the light of the gods. After its king passes away unexpectedly, a two-year-old boy ascends the throne.

Thus, a power struggle begins, with multiple potential regents duking it out to control the kingdom. The game utilises a turn-based combat system, which has players lead their party in grid-based 3D battlefields, where strategy and positioning will determine their success.

Much like other Final Fantasy games, party members will be able to level up and access different jobs, each with a unique set of abilities. There are over 20 jobs and hundreds of abilities, and players can mix and match them as they please. Chocobos and other mythical creatures can also be tamed and used in battle.

Final Fantasy Tactics–The Ivalice Chronicles improvements

This remaster comprises two parts: a remaster that adds fully-voiced dialogue, updated UI, graphical upgrades, and quality-of-life settings like an easier “Squire” difficulty setting. Alternatively, players can try the classic version, which preserves the original 1997 game’s visuals and gameplay with a few new handy features like auto save.

Final Fantasy Tactics–The Ivalice Chronicles launches on 30 September, 2025 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
