Monster Hunter Wilds reveals Gravios as latest returning monster

Gravios is a classic monster in the series, first appearing in the original Monster Hunter game all the way back in 2004.

With just over a month to go until the highly-anticipated release of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28, developer Capcom has ramped up its reveals for the game's roster of monsters. In a new gameplay showcase courtesy of IGN, Capcom revealed that the Flying Wyvern Gravios will be one of the returning monsters featured in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Gravios is a classic monster of the series, appearing in the first-ever Monster Hunter game all the way back in 2004. It is mostly seen in volcanic and swamp regions, making its home in the Oilwell Basin locale in Monster Hunter Wilds. Despite being classified as a Flying Wyvern, the wings on Gravios' arms are largely vestigial due to its massive size. Instead, it is best known for its stone-like armored shell, which causes melee weapons without a high enough Sharpness level to simply bounce off of the monster.

Capcom noted that Gravios' juvenile form, Basarios, will not be making an appearance in Monster Hunter Wilds. It is also worth noting that Basarios was included in the most recent entry in the series, Monster Hunter Rise, without its adult form.

IGN's showcase saw Gravios use its fearsome arsenal of attacks against the Hunter, including running tackles and its iconic laser beam-like magma attack. While the monster was known for being a lumbering beast that was relatively easy to outmaneuver in previous titles, Monster Hunter Wilds' version of Gravios seems more aggressive and should present a tougher challenge.

Gravios also has a couple of new moves revealed in the showcase. Its magma attacks are no longer restricted to its classic laser beam-like form, as Gravios can now also unleash fireballs while standing still or slowly moving forward with its head raised up high, ala Espinas. The monster has also inherited the ability to expel a poisonous gas from vents scattered all across its body just like its juvenile form, though it can still unleash flaming or sleep-inducing gas, just as before.

Gravios is the sixth returning monster in Monster Hunter Wilds to be revealed after Congalala, Yian Kut-Ku, Gypceros, Rathian, and Rathalos. We can expect Capcom to reveal more returning and new monsters as we continue to approach the game's long-awaited launch.

If you're just as excited for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds as we are, then the game's second open beta test period can help tide you over until February 28. Monster Hunter Wilds' second open beta will take place across two four-day periods. The first starts on February 6, 7PM PT (February 7, 11AM SGT) and will end on February 9, 6:59PM PT (February 10, 10:59AM SGT), while the second starts on February 13, 7PM PT (February 14, 11AM SGT) and will end on February 16, 6:59PM PT (February 17, 10:59AM SGT).

The game's first open beta test took place from October 31 to November 4 last year, notably pulling record-breaking numbers on Steam despite some graphics issues.

Just like in the first open beta, Monster Hunter Wilds' second open beta test will let players play through the first few hours of the game's story and participate in hunts in the Windward Plains locale. But this time around, the returning monster Gypceros will also be available to hunt, alongside the likes of newcomers Chatacabra, Doshaguma, Balahara, and Rey Dau.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be released globally on February 28, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
