Other titles that also drew in hundreds of thousands of players include Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG BATTLEGROUNDS.
Steam’s all-time concurrent player count has been broken this weekend, with over 39 million players logged in at the same time on Sunday (8 December), as recorded on SteamDB.
This record-breaking player count can be attributed to the recent launches of Path of Exile 2 and Marvel Rivals drawing in massive crowds over the weekend. Valve Software's own Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2, alongside Krafton's PUBG BATTLEGROUNDS, also contributed significantly as some of Steam's most consistently popular titles.
Path of Exile 2, Marvel Rivals draw in half a million players each
The clear winner among the newest games released on Steam over the weekend is Path of Exile 2 by Grinding Gear Games, which was released on Friday (6 December) and had over 500,000 concurrent players on record. This happened despite the game having to release a few hours later than expected.
These numbers continued to climb, with its highest recorded concurrent players at 578,569 in the last 24 hours, placing fourth among the most played games over the weekend. The game was so popular that it also hit 1.1 million Twitch viewers hours before the game was ever released, according to Forbes.com.
With the game currently having an overall Steam rating of “Very Positive,” it seems like it may take a while before Path of Exile 2 slows down.
Another popular title is Netease’s Marvel Rivals, which was released on the same day as Path of Exile 2. The game hit 444,286 concurrent players at launch, and continued to draw in more players over the entire weekend, with 480,990 concurrent players in the last 24 hours, placing it as the 5th most played game over the weekend, next to Path of Exile 2.
Marvel Rivals is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, so this only means that the player base is probably bigger than 500,000.
The top three games that continued to draw in the most players also performed pretty well over the weekend.
The top title was Counter-Strike 2, with 1,595,470 concurrent players over the last 24 hours. This was followed by PUBG BATTLEGROUNDS, with 792,301 players online within the same time frame, and finally, Dota 2, which peaked at 717,235 in the last 24 hours.
With more exciting titles on the way in 2025, Steam is on track to hit 40 million and more concurrent players in the future.
