Fortnite’s first 5v5 mode is launching this week.

Epic Games has announced a new 5v5 mode for Fortnite, and it’s launching later this week. The developer describes this first-person mode as “an adrenaline-filled, round-based 5v5 competitive game mode where strategy, tactical teamwork, and individual prowess are essential for victory” separate from Battle Royale, marking the game’s next big mode addition on top of Fortnite Lego, Fortnite OG, and Fortnite Music.

Fortnite’s new 5v5 game mode Ballistic detailed

Epic Games has announced a new first-person mode for Fortnite, titled Fortnite Ballistic. This mode will feature a few big changes to the Battle Royale gameplay fans are likely used to by now, such as its new first-person perspective, new weapons, and slimmed-down player count. The mode is launching on December 11 in early access with just one map called Skyline 10.

Here’s how it works: players will be sorted into two teams of five; attackers and defenders. The attackers have to plant a bomb-like Rift Point Device at one of two sites on the map, while the defenders have to stop the device from being planted and detonated. This is a no-build mode with no respawns, meaning that rounds will end when a Rift Point Device explodes or a team is eliminated.

To win, a team has to win seven rounds in total. After six rounds, teams will swap sides to keep things fresh. Each round begins with players having 800 Credits to spend and a Ranger Pistol to use. Much like Counter-Strike, they can spend each round buying new gear to even the odds against their enemies. All of Fortnite’s cosmetics will be supported in this mode, except for “Pickaxes, Contrails, Instruments, Vehicles, and Jam Tracks.”

Fortnite Ballistic will launch in Early Access with Ranked and Unranked modes, with new maps and content set to arrive at a later date. The mode launches alongside Fortnite OG and Battle Royale Chapter 6, rounding out the game’s meaty offering of new content to cap off 2024.
