Hogwarts Legacy 2 is reportedly a “very big priority” for Warner Bros. Discovery.

A sequel to the hit Harry Potter game adaptation Hogwarts Legacy is already in development, to no one's surprise. However, what does come as a surprise is the fact that the sequel plans to tie into HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation of the Harry Potter books, which is currently deep in development and aiming for a 2026 release window.

Hogwarts Legacy sequel confirmed to tie into HBO Harry Potter TV series

Warner Bros. Discovery has big plans for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with two flagship projects leading its efforts over the next few years: a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy and an all-new TV adaptation of the Harry Potter books. In a recent Variety report, it was revealed that both of these titles might actually have more crossover content than expected: developer Avalanche Software is “coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements” in Hogwarts Legacy with storylines from the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

Hogwarts Legacy was the top-selling game of 2023 and racked up 30 million units sold worldwide as of October 2024, so the fact that a sequel is already in development shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Warner Bros. Games has been pushing the Harry Potter game franchise hard over the last year, with a remastered version of the Lego Harry Potter games and a multiplayer Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions game.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 is reportedly a “very big priority” at the company, as it works to find different ways to capitalise on the Harry Potter franchise. Interestingly, it also looks like controversial author J.K. Rowling is “not involved in managing the franchise,” according to Variety. Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly keeps her updated on future developments via a literary agent, if only to ensure that “we’re all comfortable with what we’re doing,” if the company ever goes "beyond a canon conversation.”

The Harry Potter TV series is planned to hit HBO sometime in 2026, while Hogwarts Legacy 2 does not have a confirmed release date.
