Developer BioWare has revealed more details about its upcoming Dragon Age game.

BioWare has announced a title change for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the next instalment of its long-dormant fantasy RPG franchise Dragon Age. The game will now be called Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the villainous Dread Wolf will still play a key role in the game’s story according to general manager Gary McKay.

In a blog post, McKay unveiled the name change and announced an official gameplay reveal for June 11. The developer also went into detail on the game’s companions, rough story premise and multiple villains.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard gets first gameplay reveal next week

Electronic Arts and BioWare first announced the next instalment in the Dragon Age franchise in 2022 with the title Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, named after its titular returning villain. As of this week, however, the game has been officially retitled to be Dragon Age: The Veilguard. A poorer title, in my opinion, but seemingly done in an effort to pivot focus to the game’s central characters instead of its villains.

In a blog post diving into the change, BioWare’s general manager Gary McKay explained that “the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas.” McKay also noted that the game has been in development in various forms since 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, at one point even with a multiplayer concept in mind.

At this stage, however, The Veilguard is a single player game, “with all the choices, characters and world building you’d expect from us.” Players can also expect a new lead hero in the vein of The Warden, Hawke and the Inquisitor to call their own, in addition to an all-new cast of companions. There will be seven unique characters in total to recruit as companions in this RPG, with, “deep and compelling storylines where the decisions you make will impact your relationships with them – as well as their lives.”

Players will have to unite a team of heroes to take on, “a terrifying new threat unleashed on the world.” In Dragon Age lore, the Veil acts as a magical barrier separating the world from the Fade. Judging by the new title, it looks like players are going to have to form a team of heroes to protect the Veil from an unknown threat. In another interview with IGN, McKay revealed that Solas won’t be the only villain players will face in this adventure, either.

McKay said, “I don’t want to get too deep into spoiler territory but I can say that the Dread Wolf is not the only god players need to be worried about.” Hopefully, we’ll find out more about the game when BioWare drops its first gameplay reveal on June 11, consisting of 15 minutes from the opening moments of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
