Netflix is adapting Minecraft for a CG-animated series.
Netflix has announced that it’s officially developing an animated series adaptation of the popular sandbox game Minecraft. The project was announced during Minecraft’s 15th anniversary celebration, and will apparently have nothing to do with the game’s upcoming movie adaptation starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
Here’s a trailer for the Minecraft show:
Netflix announces new Minecraft animated series
Netflix made a surprising announcement during Minecraft’s 15th-anniversary celebration: the streamer is developing an animated series adaptation of Minecraft. Netflix also dropped a teaser along with the announcement, which starts with a single Creeper walking to the centre of the screen before doing what all Creepers do: explode. The teaser then shows us an underground cavern filled with lava and a big red Netflix logo.
The series is described by Variety as, “an original story with new characters, showing the world of 'Minecraft' in a new light.” This suggests that it will be a standalone story that won’t be tied to previous Minecraft tie-in projects, including Telltale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode, which was featured on the streaming service for a few years after its retail version was released.
This series will be a CG-animated project developed by WildBrain Studios, which also animated Netflix’s Sonic Prime game adaptation. It also won’t have anything to do with the movie adaptation of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Minecraft movie adaptation, which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks. That movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
