Get ready for an onslaught of Witcher 3 PC mods next year.

CD Projekt RED has announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting official modding tools as early as next year. The mod editor will enable players to create their, “own experiences in the game,” by editing existing quests and content or adding entirely new ones to the game.

The developer announced the mod editor’s arrival on Twitter/X:

What can a mod editor add to The Witcher 3?

CD Projekt Red’s official announcement confirms that The Witcher 3’s mod editor will arrive sometime in 2024, allowing players to edit existing in-game content like armour sets, weapons, quests, NPC characters and story dialogue in whatever way they see fit. They will also be able to add new quests and content to the game using the editor, which means that there really are no limits to what modders might be able to do with the game.

The mod editor will also be completely free to use, much like Bethesda’s upcoming modding tools for Starfield. The Witcher 3 is an eight-year-old game by this point, and CD Projekt Red is likely looking into extending its lifespan for the foreseeable future by letting players add new content and visual upgrades to the game themselves. It’s certainly worked out for Skyrim and Minecraft, so why wouldn’t it keep The Witcher 3 going for a few years longer?

However, it's worth noting that most games tend to announce their modding tools fairly early on. Eight years is a long time to wait for any game to get a mod editor, so it’s hard to say if the interest is there for creators to dive in and start messing with the game next year. Whatever interest they had was already being put to use in existing, slightly less official mods that aren't supported by CD Projekt Red. The modding scene came and went, but the existence of an official mod editor will make things a lot easier for creators all the same.

It looks like CD Projekt RED is embracing mods for its games moving forward after Cyberpunk 2077’s REDmod was released last year. Next up is the upcoming Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk sequel.
