The ALGS Championship 2023 starts today; here is what you can expect

The ALGS Championship 2023 is finally here.

The stage is set for the ALGS Championship 2023, set to take place later today at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, UK from 6 - 10 September. 40 of the best teams from around the world will descend upon the UK for the third and final time to determine who will take home the ALGS Championship trophy at the end of the week.

The ALGS Split 1 and Split 2 Playoffs took place at the Copper Box Arena in London both times, which TSM and DarkZero Esports won respectively. Both split playoffs had a $1 million prize pool while the ALGS Championship will feature a $2 million collective prize pool. And aside from the Monster Energy MVP award, there will now be the EA Positive Player award.

Format

There are no changes made to the ALGS Championship group stage format, which will follow the same procedure as the Split 1 and Split 2 Playoffs. The group stage will take place first with all 40 teams being split into four groups of 10. Each group will play one another in a six-game series to ensure every team plays a total of 18 games. The top five teams from each group will move on to the upper bracket while the bottom five will drop to the lower bracket.

As for the bracket stage, instead of the usual six-game series, it will now be an eight-game series. Teams in the upper bracket will play one eight-game series while the lower bracket will feature two eight-game series.

  • Upper Bracket: The top 10 teams will go to the grand finals. The bottom 10 teams will drop to the second round of the lower bracket.
  • Lower Bracket Round 1: The top 10 teams will move on to the second round. The bottom 10 teams will be eliminated.
  • Lower Bracket Round 2: The top 10 teams will head to the grand finals. The bottom 10 teams will be eliminated.

The final 20 teams will be in the grand finals where they will play with match Point format. The 10 teams that advanced from the upper bracket will be seeded from their placement in the previous round and will start the finals with Advanced Starting Points. There will be no match limit in the grand finals as the team that reaches the minimum threshold of 50 points first will be Match Point elligible in the next game.

Whichever team that is already Match Point elligible and wins the next match will be crowned the ALGS champions. After the winner is declared, the teams that placed second to 20th will be ranked by their grand final points. Here is how the seeding points for the 10 teams that advanced from the upper bracket will be like:

  • 1st seed - 10 points
  • 2nd seed - 9 points
  • 3rd seed - 8 points
  • 4th seed - 7 points
  • 5th seed - 6 points
  • 6th seed - 5 points
  • 7th seed - 4 points
  • 8th seed - 3 points
  • 9th seed - 2 points
  • 10th seed - 1 point

Schedule

The group stage will take place from 6 - 7 September with both days starting at 10.15 am BST. As for the bracket stage, that will be on 8 - 9 September with the lower bracket round one starting at 6.00 pm BST while the upper bracket will take place at 12.00 pm BST the following day.

The grand finals will be on the last day on 10 September and it begins at 6.00 pm BST as well. The timings of the tournament may vary from day-to-day depending on the technical difficulties that comes with hosting a 40-team LAN tournament, especially when it comes to the command centre for the live stream.

With 40 teams to choose from, it will be difficult to determine who exactly will lift the ALGS Championship. However, as TSM and DarkZero Esports are the only two teams to lift silverware this season, many are expecting either team to lift the biggest trophy of them all. DZ will also head into the ALGS Championship as the defending champions, having won it last year.

North America is always seen as one of the most dominant regions in Apex Legends, given its massive player base that also features a large streaming community. Speaking of streamers, one notable name that is included in the 40-team list is The Dojo with Timothy "iiTzTimmy" An arguably being one of the game's biggest names, who will also be making his ALGS LAN debut after pulling through the last-chance qualifiers.

The Chinese teams that will be competing at the ALGS Championship will also be one to watch with the likes of MDY White and DreamFire. APAC has always been a strong region as a whole with the likes of Fnatic, Moist Esports, ganbare otousan, PULVEREX, and REALIZE to name a few. EMEA has always had a good showing with the likes of Acend and Alliance being some of the big names on the list.

Prize Pool

The ALGS Championship 2023 will now feature a collective $2 million prize pool, which is the same amount as both Split 1 and Split 2 Playoffs combined. And while it is the same amount as last year's ALGS Championship, the prize distribution has been tweaked so that only the top 20 teams will walk away with a share of the prize pool. This is unlike last season, where each team would get a share regardless of their placement.
