John Cena has been revealed as ‘The Enigma’ in Overwatch 2’s latest marketing stunt.
Overwatch 2 has revealed that the mysterious hooded stranger appearing in recent Twitch streams is John Cena. Yes, really. As part of the game’s big marketing push for this month’s long-awaited campaign missions, Blizzard has partnered up with the renowned wrestler and Hollywood actor for... videos on social media?
Watch the reveal below:
Here’s the context: a few popular content creators started streaming Overwatch 2 seemingly out of the blue two weeks ago, only for their streams to be interrupted by a mysterious glitchy message from a figure referred to as the Enigma. These were almost certainly sponsored streams from Blizzard in an effort to drive up hype for Overwatch 2: Invasion, but they still made for a cool mystery that fans banded together to solve.
This week, Blizzard revealed that the Enigma is none other than a hacker played by John Cena, who’s sending out messages to the Overwatch team warning of an impending global invasion by the Null Sector. For those unaware, the Null Sector is a faction of Omnics led by Ramattra, who plan to launch strategic attacks around the world in order to keep humanity off balance and bring Omnics into power.
Players will face off against the Null Sector when Overwatch 2: Invasion drops with three new story missions, though it should be noted that these missions are not free. The rest of this season’s contents - ranging from a new game mode called Flashpoint to Hero Mastery missions - will be free, thankfully. The campaign missions will cost $15, taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Toronto and Gothenburg, the latter of which is an all-new map. A new Support Hero will also be introduced this season, though Blizzard remains tight-lipped on their identity.
Overwatch 2 will also launch on Steam the same day that Invasion drops: August 10. John Cena is starring in another videogame this year, too: Mortal Kombat 1.
