Evil Geniuses, led by their new captain Jesse “Jerax” Vainikka, suffered an unexpected 2-1 loss against Black N Yellow in Division I of the NA DPC League.
Evil Geniuses have dominated the North American Dota 2 scene for a long time, so any news about their defeat from a local team is bewildering. But that is even more so the case when the defeat comes from one of the lesser known teams of the NA Dota 2 scene. On Thursday, the 8th of December, EG with their new roster led by their new captain Jesse “Jerax” Vainikka faced off against Black and Yellow, and the result was something few could have predicted.
Black N YellowvsEvil Geniuses
Black N Yellow have been in Division I of the NA DPC for the last two seasons, but haven’t had a massive impact on the region as such. They’ve managed to stay up, avoiding relegation, but have never managed a top half finish. So when they went head to head against the top dogs of the region, only one result was probable. But Evil Geniuses were handed a reality check when Black N Yellow, who were playing with a new roster themselves, took them down 2-1 to make things a bit more interesting in NA.
Game 1 was taken by BnY in just over 44 minutes, with their Phantom Assassin going ham with a double cleave strat of Battlefury and Magnus’ Empower. Game 2 taken by EG in just over 30 minutes, with a fast paced Luna lineup that didn’t allow BnY’s Medusa to come online.
It all came down to game 3, where Evil Genuises went for a safe lane Shadow Fiend. Now, it is something that has been tried in the DPC and has been successful in certain games, but this wasn’t one of those games. EG did have an 8000 net worth advantage around the 21st minute, but their lineup just did not scale too well as compared to BnY, whose Gyrocopter massively out farmed all the other heroes in the game. Additionally, EG were playing with a position 5 Legion Commander, who’s effectiveness depends on getting the Aghanim’s Shard as early as possible. In this game though, she couldn’t save up the 1400 gold required to get the Shard.
The NA DPC is a delicate league with few margins for error, as North America only has two slots for every DPC Major. In the past two seasons, Evil Geniuses have lost to Quincy Crew in the league, but they managed to win every other game to ensure their qualification. Now with the unexpected loss against BnY, they can’t afford to drop a single series if they wish to stand a chance to make it to the first DPC Major of the year.
Black N Yellow stand at a score of 1-1, having lost their first series against 4Zoomers. This win against EG is bound to give the entire team a lot of confidence, and if they can take down Undying in their next series on the 11th of December, it could be time to consider them as contenders for one of the two DPC Major spots from North America.
