In Germany there is a lot of interest in e-Sports. The German electronic gaming community is huge. Although it cannot be compared to Korea's or China's the community is still very large. One competition shows that the e-Sports interest will not die anytime soon. The Giga Liga Grand Slam is a German based online and offline competition for all sorts of computer and console games. One game that Grand Slam features a lot is Brood War.
Now into its 5th season the Giga Liga Grand Slam is nearing to an end for the Brood War players. The Brood War Grand Slam starts off with an online ladder, like WGTour's, Gamei's, or PGTour's, which ever one you prefer. The ladder is to find out who will advance onto the group stage for the next round.
The group stage consist of two groups, a Group A and a Group B. 6 players are placed in each group. The top 4 players in each will advance to the next stage of the competition.
Group A1. Mondragon[pG]1. razZ.Rts 2. SSV.Fisheye2. SSV.Schnibl0r 3. Dashwriter3. iV.Goody 4. Methos[pG]4. TiQ.bob 5. iV.Stormy5. razZ.Cope 6. iV.Sky6. ReF. |
After the group stage was completed the Giga Liga Grand Slam moved on to the single elimination brackets. This part of the tournament is where things start to get a little tougher as that first place prize is just 3 game series away. The way the brackets were set up is the man who placed first in Group A would play the man who placed 4th in Group B. Than from there it is obvious.
Mondragon[pG] > TiQ.bob 2-0 |
SSV.Schnibl0r > Dashwriter 2-0 |
SSV.Fisheye < iV.Goody 1-2 |
razZ.Rts > Methos[pG] 2-0 |
Some very big upsets in the first round of this part of the competition as iV.Goody upset a favorite for the event, SSV.Fisheye. Also a very race picking player razZ.Rts pulled a very big upset over Methos[pG].
In the next round only 4 players were left. After days, weeks, months, and years of training and concentrating on their Brood War skills the 4 player's skill level was put to the test right here in this next round.
SSV.Schnibl0r < Mondragon[pG] 0-2 |
iV.Goody > razZ.Rts 2-0 |
The heavily favored Mondragon[pG] made it to the finals with dominance over all his opponents. But, another play will challenge his Giga Liga reign, iV.Goody a not very known Terran gamer who has big skill when it comes to this game. This Grand Slam V finals will be a very nice one to watch indeed.
For the two loser's of the match they played to see who would finish in at 3rd and receive the prize. Although both players are very good, the newest addition to SSV.Lehnitz came out on top, SSV.Schnibl0r got the 3rd place prize.
SSV.Schnibl0r > razZ.Rts 2-0 |
For Mondragon[pG] and iV.Goody they will play for the top prize and the Grand Slam championship. While Mondragon[pG] holds the title as Giga Liga champion iV.Goody is gunning for it. So look out for that match on August 20th. Also keep in mind the players will be playing for a lot of Euros, so a lot is at stake here in this match.
