Hangul Lessons

[s]starcraft[/s]

Everything that requires mastery will create Masters, and of course a new language. And Starcraft is no exception. It has slowly been evolving and creating its own new language with new terms specific for the game and borrowed terms from RTS, FPS, military terminology and yes, Hangul too!

Even Blizzard has realized this and in their forums they are still compiling a dictionary, or 'glossary', of terminology that we Starcraft gamers use. Some of course are terms borrowed from other classic Real Time Strategy games such as warcraft and others. Some are terms even borrowed from the First Person Shooter community, but most are our own and thus very game specific.

I found this post at TL.net that has remained pretty much ignored and most news writers will simply shy away from making news out of such humble posting but I could not resist it. In this humble TL.net thread, South Korea [BOyGiRl]ShaRp explains two Korean terms that describe two types of storms.

The literary translation of Mudang is exorcist, or sorceress. It is used when the storm is really well placed and kills a whole lot of units. Also if a Reaver kills a lot of units it is called a Mudang Reaver. But for some reason Mudang isn't applied to other units. Also for storms, there is this thing called Storm shower and Chunji Storm which literally means heaven and earth storm. It's used when numerous storms are used at once and the other player's units is just swarmed by storms.A true Mudang Storm is when your opponent not only fries your units with one perfect storm but he anticipates your movement almost as if he had read your mind. A good Chunji Storm is one where your opponent fries you whole army with a blanket of several storms, usually more than 3 storms.

I asked the craziest of all entropians, Canada Remi_le_Fenit, to help me get the right screenshots. When I explained to him what I wanted to reproduce he said, "ah you want a true psychic storm and a thunderstorm?" So I made some Hydras and he cremated them with the best of all protoss electrical fire for the amusement of our readers.

More Korean terms will be welcomed as a reply. If you're Korean and you read this, make sure Blizzard's Glossary is filled with Kor-English words. Post a replay here or at TL.net and I will make sure it gets into the Glossary.

Well that's two new bits for Blizzard's growing Starcraft Glossary.
