Blizzplanet and SEN?

[s]event[/s]First Blizzplanet, now Staredit.net or otherwise known as SEN. Both successful sites offering decent content for our community were hacked and brought down with none other but malicious intent. Blizzplanet is in its recovery phase but staredit.net is still down. Blizzplanet was hacked a few months, Staredit a few days ago. Different hackers but same mentality. The hacker that hacked Staredit does not even hide it and has posted his achievement in Blizzforums. Sad.

Let me quote Canada CaptainWill, who is not the hacker for those of you who read fast, posted his views about why SEN was hacked, which was followed by a reply from the hacker:*Sigh*

The SC mapping community, torn apart from within by differences between members on the subject of map protection, and attacked from the outside by die-hard map-stealers, has finally gone into its death throes.
The situation was stable until about a month ago, when everything began to fall in on our heads. First of all, maps were lifted from SEN and placed on an unpopular site (Icy-Hell). The site was then hacked (members of SEN to blame) after attempts to get the copied content taken down.
Then we had the UNPROEdit trojan, which further split opinion on just how far people should go to protect their maps. It also angered a lot of hacker-nerds, who, I can only assume, saw it as a stain on their 'honour' that they would be taken in by such a piece of bait. Clokr_ is most closely associated with SEN today, which I think made SEN a target for all the little hackers.

Stupid kids.
You can check at » blizzforums the hacker's own reply and admission to his actions and his own justifications.

What will happen to these sites? Blizzplanet has full intentions of renewing itself and continue its work. Staredit.net although fully backed up 10 minutes prior to moment they were hacked may just not return to its earlier glory. Its webmaster disheartened has for the moment quit all Broodwar activities. Many in the map making community will try to convince him otherwise but I understand his decision. Why bother if people will reward him so?

Anyway, most of this breed of hackers hack for one reason only, attention. You can throw in other reasons sometimes such as vengeance or jealousy or simply an inability to create thus their only outlet to self significance is to destroy. Still attention is usually their main goal, and to obtain it they must reveal themselves and when they do they expose themselves. If the hacker happens to live in the USA it is unfortunate for them that hacking any site is a federal crime punishable with up to 10 years in jail if you happen to be unlucky enough and annoy the right person.

How do you report such a crime in the USA? The best place to start is your local FBI office considering it is a federal offence. Check » Cybercrime.gov for more information. In Germany I believe their laws against hacking are even tougher.

So if you have a site, back it up twice a week like we do; and if you are ever hacked do not hesitate to use the law, in the long run it pays off. As for Blizzplanet and SEN, what can be done for them in their hard moments? Believe it or not a few words of encouragment carries a long way. I hope both sites return to their previous glory.
