Game to watch: G2 Esports vs. Origen

Week 4 of the EU LCS offers the chance to see either a return to form or a reaffirming grasp on the top in a match between two heavyweight teams.

If you're just looking at the standings, this shouldn't be much of a contest. G2 Esports currently sits at 5 wins and 1 loss coming into their Week 4 matchup with the 3 win and 3 loss Origen. But, for the followers of the European League of Legends Championship Series, we know there's a lot more that meets the eye with this match that takes place tomorrow on February 4th. This match could point to a lot of questions that have come up this season. Questions like: will Origen ever able to get their performance back to their Top 4 Worlds finish caliber? Are G2 Esports legitimately a top threat? Let's start with the background info coming into this matchup.

How They Formed

Origen came into the LCS during the Summer Split last year as a brand new team coming in from the Challenger Series. Despite this, the squad, which is filled with LCS veterans, excelled all expectations and made their to the World Championship last year. It was the first time we've seen a fresh LCS team do so well, with their quarterfinal finish at Worlds. Origen made few changes from that roster during the offseason, adding only one new player.

Origen's starting roster is currently:

  • Top: Paul "sOAZ" Boyer
  • Jungle: Maurice "Amazing" Stückenschneider
  • Mid: Tristan "PowerOfEvil" Schrage (formerly of Unicorns of Love)
  • ADC: Jesper "Zven" Svenningsen
  • Support: Alfonso "Mithy" Rodriguez

G2 Esports' entry into the LCS actually mirrors some elements of Origen. Both teams came up through the Challenger Series, with G2 debuting this Spring Split versus Origen during Summer. The team also has a few LCS veterans on it. However, for the most part, this is a team full of rookies that have been proving themselves worthy of notice in the EU LCS. There were also a number of roster changes that occurred before their arrival in the LCS.

G2 Esports' starting roster is currently:

  • Top: Mateusz "Kikis" Szkudlarek (formerly on Unicorns of Love)
  • Jungle: Kim "Trick" Gang-yun (formerly on CJ Entus)
  • Mid: Luka "Perkz" Perkovic
  • ADC: Kim "Emperor" Jin-hyeon (formerly on Team Dragon Knights)
  • Support: Glenn "Hybrid" Doornenbal

Storylines

There is not really any history between these two teams, as this is G2's first ever split in the LCS. However, there are a few interesting things about this matchup going in. This will be the first time that Kikis and PowerOfEvil face off against one another since both left Unicorns of Love. Both are facing struggles with adjustment, with PowerOfEvil trying to adapt to his new role in his team and Kikis still trying to adapt to his transistion from Jungle to the Top Lane.

There will also be a contest between two up-and-coming superstars in the form of OG's ADC Zven and G2's Mid Laner Perkz. Zven was easily the EU LCS rookie of the year last year, and has been one of the bright spots this split in a struggling Origen lineup. On the other side, Perkz, in his debut season, hasn't shined away from the challenge of the LCS and has straight out carried G2 on his back through his lane dominance. These two mechanically gifted and aggressive young stars will face off for the first time as well.

If there was a matchup that could decide the game, it would be between the junglers in the form of G2's Trick and OG's Amazing. Trick has shown a great propensity for getting his lanes ahead early with interesting pathing and aggressive ganks. Amazing, on the other hand, has been a solid all-around jungler known for being at the right place at the right time, whether it being counterganking or sneaking up right behind an out-of-place laner with a well-place Elise cocoon. If Trick or Amazing could get the upper hand on their counterpart, it could mean the difference for their team.

Conclusion

This match is a bit hard to call. If Origen comes with their top form, they could manage G2's overaggressive tendencies and outmanuver them on the map. However, if OG slacks at all or if their miscommunications continue, G2 definitely will take advantage and stand tall over OG. We shall have to see who comes out on top soon and let us know who you think will win in this match below!
