Interview with Sam "Milkfat" Braithwaite

Interview with milkfat who is the current Guinness world record holder for the most consecutive hours played in a strategy game.

Sam "Milkfat" Braithwaite just broke the world record.

Greetings Sam, thanks for doing this interview with me. How are you doing today? Have you gotten much sleep since your marathon?

After my attempt I slept for 16 hours
Hi Josh!!!!! I am doing awesome. I am finally starting to recover from my world record attempt and feeling good! Immediately after my attempt I slept for 16 hours but now I am on a normal sleep schedule again.

Let’s talk about your Guinness world record for a little bit, how did you come up with this idea? What made you want to this?

I applied for the record a long time ago when I was still playing HoN competitively and it was something my friends and I wanted to do together. I stopped playing games for a bit to focus on my career and I got a letter from Guinness letting me know that my application was accepting and I was ready to attempt the record. At the time I was feeling like something was missing from my life(gaming I assumed) so I jumped back into HoN to slay the record.

Why did you choose to play Heroes of Newrth for the record attempt? Why not Dota2 or League of Legends?

I chose Heroes of Newerth because overall it is the game that I enjoy the most. I am personal friends with a lot of people over at S2 who helped me organize the entire thing and most of my friends play HoN exclusively.

Can you go into detail as to how you prepared for this world record attempt? What kind of preparation was needed?

They put me on a strict sleeping schedule, diet, and exercise program

The first thing that I did when I decided I wanted to go for the record was visit a doctor. They put me on a strict sleeping schedule, diet, and exercise program that helped me stay up longer while giving my body natural energy. After about 2 months of the program I felt like I was ready and I went and shattered the record!!

You had a ton of support for this event, you had sponsors like Monster, Gunnar and TwitchTV helping you out. What kind of impact did these sponsor have on your attempt. Do you think you could have done it without them?

I was very lucky to have a bunch of awesome sponsors at the event. There is no way I could have done it without GUNNARS, S2, and Howies. If I would have attempted this in my apartment I would have failed but with the support of the community and my sponsors it was a little less difficult.

A special thanks to GUNNARS for hooking me up with some glasses. I can honestly say if it wasn’t for those glasses my eyes wouldn’t have made it the full 76 hours.

While you were streaming for 76hours, you were also accepting donations, where is the money going? Can you tell us about the charity you were raising money for?

That trip changed my life and I have always wanted to do something to give back.

Absolutely! I was raising money for Doctors Without Borders. When I was just graduating high school I went on a trip with the organization with my father(A doctor) to Kenya and Tanzania. We administered aid, medicine, and helped build an orphanage. That trip changed my life and I have always wanted to do something to give back.

You dabbled in the League of Legends scene for a little bit, how did that go?

I did play League of Legends for a bit! I loved the game actually and the community was very helpful and fun but unfortunately due to some real life circumstances I was forced to leave gaming entirely for 6 months. When I was finally able to play again all of my friends were playing HoN so that’s the game I stuck with.

While playing League of Legends, you must have noticed some pretty big differences between Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends.

What were some of these differences?

One of the things that I hated most in LoL was that you were forced to have a jungler every single game or else you would lose. There was never a 2-1-2 lane setup even in pubs. It’s funny because HoN is in that meta-stage now and I hate it as well! Another big difference back when I played was the effectiveness of flash and how passive that made the game.

Dota2 beta has been out of for a while now, how do you feel about the game? How is it in comparison to Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends?

I’ve only played DotA2 a handful of times but I enjoyed it. It’s good to see a game get so much E-sports coverage while still in beta. The game is going to be great but right now in its current form it is a little slow for me. I am sure if I played it enough I would get used to it but I am enjoying Hon right now.

How do you feel about the current game play of Heroes of Newerth? Are games too slow, too fast or has S2 done a good job so far?

I think I am one of the few people who are actually happy with what S2 has done with the game. Obviously some of the heroes released are a little too weak or strong but overall the balance isn’t awful. I really like how fast pace the game is right now but I dislike the necessity of having a jungle hero. I just really miss the 2-1-2 setup in games and having really fun and strong lane combinations!

If you had the chance you change one thing in HoN, anything at all, what would it be and why?

I would give HoN a lot more E-sports spotlight and sponsors.

Hmmm…That’s a good question. I would give HoN a lot more E-sports spotlight and sponsors. It is a great game and if more tournaments/organizations picked it up it would be a lot more mainstream.

Before your Guinness world record attempt, you started a website called Clan Milk, what exactly is this website about? What do you hope you achieve with Clan Milk?

Clanmilk.com is my competitive teams website as well as a community website for HoN players. My goals with clanmilk.com are to promote people’s streams, build a community, and connect professional gamers with that community. The community and fans are the factors that drive e-sports and I want to focus on building a competitive team around that.

Thank you once again Sam for doing this interview with me. Any final words or shoutouts?

Shoutout to Panman, Clan MILK staff, Milkboxx and all of my fans. Thank you guys for the support!
