The HyperX Head-to-Head tournament came to a close last night with Petar ‘Gaara’ Stevanovic claiming victory over Sebastian ‘Forsen’ Fors, 3-0 in the finals.
Going into the series, Forsen was seen as the overwhelming favourite coming off his previous tournament success at the HTC Invitationals last week. Gaara has had a tougher time since his triumph at DreamHack Bucharest last year. Until yesterday, the Tempo Storm player had not managed to reach the grand finals at any event this year. However, despite Gaara’s recent struggles, he battled his way past talented players to reach the finals. Gaara claimed wins against Aleksandr ‘Kolento’ Malsh in the opening round and progressed through the semifinals after beating David ‘Dog’ Caero, only dropping a single game in each.
Forsen stuck with the strategy of targeting Druid that saw him succeed at the HTC Invitationals, but was out of luck facing Gaara’s line up of Hunter, Paladin and Warlock. In the end, this turned out to be Forsen’s downfall as Gaara took the first game with his Control Paladin against Forsen’s Zoolock. This left Forsen remaining with only his mech decks of Mage and Shaman, the latter of which suffered consecutive defeats resulting in Gaara taking his first major championship in over a year.
Gaara’s success came with $1,500 as a reward and he will probably hope to put his past performances behind him and aim to press on from this win going into any future events.
