Decklist spotlight: In KPL deckbuilding heaven with Kolento, Reynad, Savjz and Gaara

Kinguin PRO League is in full force, now in its fourth week. With players changing decks every playday the league is a deep well of deckbuilding ideas and last night's matches made sure that unorthodox is very much on the table.

For the most part, the established builds for the different classes are widely known. They regularly appear in tournament and you can watch them being played any time, anywhere.

Every once in a while, though, a player decides to throw a curveball and bring something outside the norm. In last night’s KPL, a total of four players – including Savjz, Reynad, Kolento and Gaara – gave Hearthstone fans a whole bucket of deckbuilding ideas.

It’s no surprise that two of the decks come from Tempo Storm’s workshop. Reynad’s boys have always tried to innovate and twist the standards for metagame and build if not consistent, than at least fun and surprising decks. Below, we take a look at the “Echoing Secrets” of Reynad, an [card]Echo of Medivh[/card]-based Mage with a total of five secrets. The deck has a very strong tempo component with [card]Mana Wyrm[/card], [card]Sorcere'’s Apprentice[/card] and [card]Kirin Tor Mage[/card] and lacks any real finisher – its goal is to kill you with value as it copies [card]Piloted Shredder[/card], [card]Sludge Belcher[/card] and [card]Loatheb[/card] over and over again.

Staying on Tempo Storm territory, we take a look at Gaara’s revamped midrange Thrall. Shaman as a class has been quite unpopular in the GvG era but the DreamHack champion has always been known for its totem skills. Gaara’s build brings back [card]Al'Akir the Windlord[/card] as finisher and features even more burn, as double [card]Crackle[/card]s are added to the standard Bolt/Earthshock/Rockbiter trio.

Liquid’s own Savjz also took a step away from the standard, surprising poor Frezzar in two of their games. First, he brought out his aggro [card]Hobgoblin[/card] Paladin – affectionately named Eboladin – to run over his opponent. His second deck was a shift in the completely opposite direction: a very slow control Priest with double [card]Lightbomb[/card], [card]Deathlord[/card] and [card]Gilblin Stalker[/card]s. Certainly not your everyday Priest build.

And finally, we have Kolento, winner of the “Innovator of the Year” award for 2014 and with good reason. Kolento recently made a bountiful trip to China, winning the CN vs EU tournament, and one of his decks was a very combo-oriented Priest build, with [card]Shrinkmeister[/card]s, [card]Recombobulator[/card]s and two [card]Shadow Madness[/card]s. The goal: steal everything, because what fun is playing with Priest cards only?
