Esports Malaysia (eSM) is the new governing body of Malaysian e-Sports, launched and registered under the Sports Commission of Malaysia. With the launch of eSM, e-Sports will receive the official recognition of the Malaysian government, much like other popular sports.
2014 was a rather troublesome year for Malaysian e-Sports, and all the issues that emerged (like the Arrow Gaming matchfixing scandal) made clear that a solid, official infrastructure was needed to protect the interests of the teams and the players. The Malaysian government decided to take action with the creation of eSM (e-Sports Malaysia) - the new governing body of Malaysia e-Sports. eSM is registered under the Malaysian Sports Commission, it aims to organize and develop the professional gaming industry in the country. The media launch of eSM will take place at Dewan Perdana FELDA, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, January 28th.
It should be noted that eSM is not the first e-Sports association to be created in Asia. South Korea's KeSPA was also created under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and it has the same purpose. However, further details on eSM's authority over the teams and tournaments will be released at a later date. It is know that that e-Sports will be receiving the same recognition as other popular physical sports such as football, a significant change for the established and aspiring Malaysian pro gamers.
