Dota 2 most played Steam game 2012

If you compare users online numbers throughout the year, Dota 2 is the most played single game on Steam for 2012. Skyrim and TeamFortress left behind, Counter-Strike only strong if you combine editions.

Dota 2 has gone a long way in 2012, but is already breaking records. On weekends, the mark of 200.000 users online at the same time has already been breached. Overall, if you believe in the statistics the Steamgraph.net logs from the official steam statistics page, Dota 2 was overall already the most played game in steam for the whole year 2012.

While The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim still holds the record for most people online on steam for a single game in Fall 2011 during it’s release, it has continuously stepped down by time. TeamFortress 2, a Valve-own Free2Play tactical shooter, has been very strong concerning users online during summer. Since The International 2 however, Dota 2 is the game with most people online basically at any time.

According to the statistics on Steamgraph.net, Dota 2 will be played by the end of the year around 650 million hours in total for 2012. Skyrim lands around 350 million hours, TeamFortress 2 around 540 million hours. Only if you combine the the Counter-Strike titles 1.6 (500 million hours), CS: Source (400 million hours) and CS: Global Offensive (90 million hours), they still beat Valve's Dota 2 on Steam in the long run.

However, League of Legends with 3 million players online at the same time is way bigger overall than Dota 2. The 3 million number of LoL is a self-promotion of Riot Games, just as the Steam statistics are a self-published number by Valve. Also, with Dota 2, idling hours that are not active play like lobbies ore DotaTV also count towards the players online statistics. These activities might not play a similar effect for other Steam games.
